Familymeds will accept and encourages patients to send items such as outdated prescriptions or other hazardous health care products (needles or syringes) to us for proper disposal. These products will be destroyed and not used for resale. If you have need for this service, please contact Customer Support for return instructions.

What Do I Do With Old Drugs?

Most drugs, including both prescription and over-the-counter products, have an expiration date. On a prescription drug, the expiration date is one year after the prescription was filled. Over-the-counter drugs usually have an expiration date printed on the bottle or packaging. If you have drugs that are older than these reference dates, the best way to dispose of the drugs is to flush them down a toilet, wash them down a garbage disposal, or return them to a pharmacy. If you would like Familymeds to dispose of any outdated drugs for you, simply mail them to us at the below address. And please make sure to include a note that you would like us to destroy the contents of the package.

What Do I Do With Used Needles, Syringes, And Lancets?

Needles, syringes, and lancets must be handled with care to prevent accidentally sticking yourself. You should never recap or reuse any needle, syringe, or lancet. These items should be placed in a container specifically designed for disposal of sharp items. You can purchase one from us; it is called a “sharps” container. Laws vary from county to county on how to dispose of the “sharps” container once it is full. You should contact your county health department or local solid waste disposal company for the specific requirements set forth by your county. If you prefer, you can mail the container to Familymeds and we will dispose of it for you.
